Opinion: the Trapa, the Dragonera, the Mallorcan Council, the Balearic Government and the GOB
According to the Diari de Balears, the Mallorcan Council intends to make a great park of the Dragonera and the Trapa in Andratx. The Dragonera Island belongs to the public since the Mallorcan Council bought it from the Banco de Bilbao in 1988. The Trapa belongs to the GOB, who bought it via contributions from sympathisers of the ecological organisation. The objective of the Council is to obtain the territorial designation of maritme-land park for the whole area of Andratx. The only park, in the whole of Spain with this denomination, is the national park of Cabrera. At the time of writing, we ignore the GOB's opinion in this connection, but it must be remembered that the GOB is requesting for the whole Tramuntana Range to be declared a natural park, that is integral protection from the Dragonera up to Formentor.

The building activity in the Andratx area in the last few years has been rampant and it seems positive that the institutions should try to protect areas that can still be saved from territorial speculation and barbaric development. Any way, partial policies and great protectionist speeches must be in doubt. If modern times are characterised in any way it is by the similarity of speeches and slogans. The virtuality must not lead from reality which is crude and often disagreeable. We cannot forget that in the Andratx area new urbanisations are being carried out with the permission of the Mallorcan Council. Some of these urbanisations, such as one near Cala D'Egos, not paralysed by any moratorium, limit on these areas they now wish to protect. The list is long, but above all one of the barbaric constructions is a new development in the area of Sa Coma in Andratx, in lands protected by the Law of Natural Areas (LEN) and which is today the object of destruction (PHOTO), thanks to a declaration of social interest by the Mallorcan Council. The valley of Sa Coma Calenta in Andratx, was until recently, one of the few areas of the municipality where the authentic feel of rural Mallorca could still be enjoyed and it is rapidly becoming another centre of speculation.

We do not trust partial policies and the propaganda campaigns that do not seek global policies of sustainable culture and economy. We think that we have a land that can still be saved but that action is necessary to permit the development the people of the "Serra" and their villages. In fact, if pertinent social, urban and economic policies are applied, a Natural Park would not be necessary as the whole of Mallorca should be so classed. Finally, we criticise the Balearic Government for its lack of definition in the project of the Parc Bit and the scandal that it developing an area without knowing its social and economic use, represents.
