Special General Elections 2004

Special General Elections 2004
Next March 14, 2004, throughout the whole of Spain there will be elections to choose the 350 members of parliament (congress) and 208 senators (senate) who make up the Cortes Generales for the next four years and who will in turn elect the new president of the Central Government. Nearly 700 thousand citizens in the Balearics are called to vote, according to data from the electoral census of the INE. The Balearics will have to choose for the first time 8 MPs, one more than the last time. Five senators will also be elected: three for Mallorca, one for Menorca and one for Eivissa and Formentera.

Last February 16, the Electoral Committee proclaimed the candidatures and the following day they were published in the BOE. The electoral campaign starts on Friday February 27 at 00.00h and ends on Friday March 12 at 24.00h.

The main novelty for these elections is that the left parties of the Balearics, except the Partit Socialista, are presenting a coalition for Congress, and also for the Senate for Mallorca, and aims at breaking the present two party representation by PP and PSOE. The coalition candidature, called Progressistes per les Illes Balears, does not include the election for a senator from Menorca, no from Eivissa and Formentera, where no agreement could be reached.

Therefore, on Menorca, the PSM-Entesa Nacionalista and Esquerra de Menorca are presenting their own two candidatures for the Senate, while in the end Els Verds are not presenting one.

And on Eivissa and Formentera, the left is presenting a group candidature for the Senate, called Progressistes per Eivissa i Formentera and comprising the same parties as the Progressistes per les Illes Balears, except Els Verds.

Here is a summary of the candidatures presented to the Congress of Mempers of Parliament and to the Senate:
