The United Nations Conference
on Environment and Development (UNCED), held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992,
reached an unprecedented consensus on
Agenda
21, its global programme for sustainable development. A decade later,
a second
UN "Earth Summit" (dubbed
Rio+10)
will be held in South Africa in mid-2002 to assess progress made towards
Agenda 21 goals. In preparation for that event,
FAO
is undertaking a major review of achievements - and new challenges and
opportunities - in two areas fundamental to UNCED objectives: sustainable
agriculture and land use.
