Earth Summit+10: the challenges after Rio
The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, reached an unprecedented consensus on Agenda 21, its global programme for sustainable development. A decade later, a second UN "Earth Summit" (dubbed Rio+10) will be held in South Africa in mid-2002 to assess progress made towards Agenda 21 goals. In preparation for that event, FAO is undertaking a major review of achievements - and new challenges and opportunities - in two areas fundamental to UNCED objectives: sustainable agriculture and land use.
