The Law for Insular Councils

The Parliament of the Balearics (PIB) passed last October 24, 2000 the Law for Insular Councils. The new law extends the authority of the Insular Councils with the view to converting the insular institutions into the real governments for each one of the islands.

The Law of the Councils will become valid two months after its publication in the Official Gazette of the Balearics Parliament(BOPIB 03/11/2000).

The Law for Insular Councils had the votes for of all the parties in the Progress Pact, who give their parliamentary support to the Balearic Government, and the vote against by the Partido Popular, who pointed out the non-constitutionality of the law and announced that the Central Government will present an appeal of non-contitucionality to prevent its application.

With the new Law, each Insular Council will be able to incorporate to its Governing Cabinet, people who were not elected in the elections.
