According to the Obra Cultural Balear (
OCB)
the situation of the Catalan language on Mallorca is very serious.
Yesterday the president of the OCB, Antoni Mir, accompanied by the promoter
for popular culture, Antoni Torrens, and the sculptor, Jaume Mir, presented
the events "III Trobada d'amics de la lleungua i socis de l'OCB" in Lluc,
that will take place on Sunday, March 25, and announced the organisation
of the "VII Diada reivindicativa per la Llengua i l'Autogovern", that will
be held on May 5.
At the presentation and in the press release, Antoni Mir, stated that
the situation of the Catalan language is very serious, and that it is worsened
by the immigration current of the last five years, that represents between
90,000 and 100,000 people more who live on Mallorca. Of these immigrants,
65,000 are foreigners, 72 per cent from the European Union and 28 from
non-community countries. The president of the OCB claims from the
Govern
de les Illes Balears the fulfilment of the programme by the
Progress
Pact in relation to the application of the Law for Linguistic Normalisation,
passed in 1986, to make the use of the Catalan language reach every ambit
of the Balearic society, guaranteeing the knowledge of the Islands' own
language and their culture for everyone who comes from outside the Islands,
to facilitate their integration and the social cohesion of the country.
